In keeping more with actual history than Philippa Gregory's novel, "The Other Boleyn Girl movie" is a titillating, political film with an all star cast at the top of their game. With fresh crisp writing, the movie feels like the old hollywood movies of old, with a fresh new look. The talented cast, led by Eric Bana and Scarlett Johansson as Henry VIII and Mary Boleyn, could make this movie work with not only upscale audiences, but also with a larger crowd, based on the good reviews, and solid promotion.
The narrative is written in a way that is crystal clear and easy to understand without losing any of the meaning of the original novel. Starting off the movie with the two sister, it quickly jumps to the marriage of the elder sister, Mary to the son of a merchant family. The other sister played by Natalie Portman has other plans than marriage,and her father, Sir Thomas Boleyn has bigger plans for advancing the families prominence. The goal to try to produce a male heir for the King.
Anne, (Portman) is ordered to become the mistress of the King, in an effort t o gain leverage with the Royal Family. The plan back fires and the King ends up falling for the younger sister, Mary. Sir Thomas quickly switches Anne to Mary, with the approval of her unscrupulous husband, Mary becomes a lady in waiting in the kings court.
To the delight of Sir Thomas, Henry and Mary become lovers, and the now pissed off Anne elopes with a nobody. Anne is exiled to France by her father to learn some manners.
Then with Mary giving birth to a girl, Sir Thomas and the Duke send for Anne's return with the promise that she is changed. However, Anne's transformation is only that she is more determined and ambitious than ever.
King Henry's attention then turns to the unattainable Anne who takes control of her father's and uncle's scheming to manipulate her way into the Queen's chair. Natalie Portman cranks up her character's stubborness and arrogance before things fall apart, and Anne's plan disintegrates.
With a beautiful score and rich costume design, This movie is a must for period piece lovers.
